I'm convinced that if the current implementation in gnome-session is improved to be more general and a second implementation of the interface actually appears, that upstream would be happy to consider a patch for it. Right now there's not much point from their side to spend time on improving for a future theoretical scenario. (Specially since no matter how much preparatory work they do, peoples first step always seems to be to fork rather then contribute.)
