Can you try to get an usb_modeswitch log?
I'm not sure if it works properly during boot, but it may be worth a
try.
To be sure it works, I first tried with the old version of
usb-modeswitch(-data). It turns out that logging during boot not only
doesn't work, but it actually prevents switching. :\
