Hi,
I have both 7.4. and 8.1 installed ,but 8.1 is currently not running.
When updating, I got the following error messages:

Setting up postgresql-common (32) ...
Stopping PostgreSQL 7.4 database server: main.
Starting PostgreSQL 7.4 database server: main.
Stopping PostgreSQL 8.1 database server: mainError: cluster is not running
 failed!
Starting PostgreSQL 8.1 database server: mainError: Could not parse locale out 
of pg_controldata output
 failed!
