The C and posix standards.  There isn't anything "special" about these
options that overrides the broader exit status standard.

mkfs.vfat doesn't have a --version switch.  If there are "many others"
then please list a few, since I have done a pretty darn thorough
search and found none.

I probably will submit a patch for that, though it does not help if
you are actually interested in finding the version.
