Well, it's still very useful to porters (and other bootstrappers) in allowing to bootstrap using just a simple command rather than needing to hand-edit debian/rules with the needed changes. Although, we're currently discussing a patch to debhelper which would allow us to put things like "Build-Profiles: !stage1" in debian/control binary package stanzas instead of the conditional -Nfoo -Nbar we're using now.
