I thik most commands are automatically extracted, but packages can install their own overrides in their postinst scripts. http://tinyurl.com/n8k7kt9 That's the code that I think does the command extraction on build. I wasn't able to find much documentation on exactly how this works and don't have time right now to study the code, but I think that's the ticket. I'm Cc'ing Zygmunt and Michael to see if they have any additional clues.
