That's a good question, but one without an easy answer. From your description of the issue it sounds like closing the laptop's lid is putting the laptop's LCD to sleep, then it isn't coming back upon wake. Sometimes this is an issue with the videocard driver, sometimes it can be an issue with the LCD backlight driver. To try to figure this out, you might look through one of the X logs such as /var/log/Xorg.0.log to see which drivers are in use in X. From there hopefully you can find an appropriate Debian package associated with the driver that isn't waking correctly, and file a bug against that package.
