This is optional under The Unicode Standard, so I had it listed in a
TODO/What's Next list instead of listed as a bug. The Unicode Standard
5.0, which was the authority for Unifont 5.1, allows "simply displaying
nothing" (The Unicode Standard 5.0, p. 155). Using the space character
as a replacement character was common in BDF fonts, and Unifont is a BDF
font at heart. The space character was used in Unifont as a replacement
character from its early days.

However, this is changed to U+FFFD in the latest upstream version.
