If that's what it takes to get a working menu item, I'm afraid
some silliness will be required. It's unfortunate, but AFAIK Debian
doesn't have a clean cross-DE way of providing menu items for
applications which need to run as root. That's suboptimal, but
gparted wouldn't be the first package resorting to a hack to get
this working :-(
Isn't the clean cross-DE way of providing menu items for applications
which need to run as root provided by the menu package?
I was talking about "normal" menu items. You are right that Debian menu items
are not a problem. If the normal menu item would be removed or excluded from KDE, the bug
would be solved, although systems without menu-xdg would then show no menu item for
gparted.
The menu-xdg
package is recommended by the task-kde-desktop package, which I guess
is why I have it installed. Maybe this should be a hard depends, or
maybe you shouldn't remove recommended packages?
KDE doesn't depend on task-kde-desktop, so changing to a hard depends wouldn't
solve much. Currently, only afterstep depends on menu-xdg. We could either have
all applications or all XDG desktops depend on menu-xdg. Having DE-s install
menu-xdg is useless if there is no Debian menu item. KDE currently has 2 menu
systems, which is a problem. We should merge the two and drop one. Ultimately,
some decisions need to be taken, but I'm not in a position to do that.
