Unless I am very much mistaken, the core of the problem is that since
devfs disapeared in 2.6.12, initrd-tools is no longer a viable choice,
so we are scrambling to find one. Both Yarid and initramfs-tools are now
under very heavy development, progress is being made by the day, and to
be honest the whole thing seems to be a lot less painful that I feared.
