I would normally agree, but I believe that the upstream is dead (no updates in 7+ years) and it's not just a substitution API, but would be a reimplementation, but I'll leave the maintainer to decide the proper course of action. If openjdk-6 is to be removed in Jessie and there is no desire to port this package, maybe it would be best to pro-actively remove it now.
