My point was that no manual shutdown is needed.

...but reading that lintian description taught me something new - I was 
unaware that switching to runlevel 1 automagically cared about killing 
stray processes.

So thank you for enlightening me - I will clean this up (and do so for 3 
other packages having similar issue).
