Ok, "unknwon filesystem" might be an interesting hint.

Here are my affected disks:

On the other hand, I have 1 DVD of Etch which doesn't have this
problem. I also have a series of 10 home made video disks written in
2004.
Do you happen to see any pattern (maybe in the used filesystems) in
the successful/failing DVDs?

None that fills my sight anyway... as I said, some ISO9660 discs cannot be verified, while one can be verified. So, whether a disc can or cannot be verified does not only depend on the filesystem.

Sorry, I sent this too soon.

First, clearly the DVD is not a CD-ROM.
The filesystem used by Civilization V is UDF. Indeed, there is no case for UDF in cdck.

As for the Debian ISO9660 images, I think I found how the Etch disk differs from the Lenny and Squeeze disks. Here is what disktype says on the latter:
# disktype /dev/cdrom

--- /dev/cdrom
Block device, size 4.376 GiB (4698341376 bytes)
CD-ROM, 1 track, CDDB disk ID 02000001
Track 1: Data track, 0 bytes
  ISO9660 file system
    Volume name "Debian 5.0.0 i386 Bin-1"
Application "GENISOIMAGE ISO 9660/HFS FILESYSTEM CREATOR (C) 1993 E.YOUNGDALE (C) 1997-2006 J.PEARSON/J.SCHILLING (C) 2006-2007 CDRKIT TEAM"
Data size 4.376 GiB (4698322944 bytes, 2294103 blocks of 2 KiB)
El Torito boot record, catalog at 5044
Bootable non-emulated image, starts at 5045, preloads 2 KiB
        Platform 0x00 (x86), System Type 0x00 (Empty)
        ISOLINUX boot loader
Joliet extension, volume name "Debian 5.0.0 i38"

And here is what it says on etch:
# disktype /dev/cdrom

--- /dev/cdrom
Block device, size 4.376 GiB (4698439680 bytes)
CD-ROM, 1 track, CDDB disk ID 02083401
Track 1: Data track, 307.8 MiB (322701312 bytes)
  ISO9660 file system
    Volume name "Debian 4.0 r0 i386 Bin-1"
Application "MKISOFS ISO 9660/HFS FILESYSTEM BUILDER & CDRECORD CD-R/DVD CREATOR (C) 1993 E.YOUNGDALE (C) 1997 J.PEARSON/J.SCHILLING"
Data size 4.376 GiB (4698417152 bytes, 2294149 blocks of 2 KiB)
El Torito boot record, catalog at 5872
Bootable non-emulated image, starts at 5873, preloads 2 KiB
        Platform 0x00 (x86), System Type 0x00 (Empty)
        ISOLINUX boot loader
Joliet extension, volume name "Debian 4.0 r0 i3"

I do not understand why the etch disc has a track only 308 MB in size. But certainly, if that matters for cdck, then the 0 bytes track of more recent discs will prevent verification.
