Thanks!  I didn't even know where to look.  It turns out that
I had esound and gstreamer0.8 installed and configured correctly,
but I didn't have gstreamer0.8-plugins.  After installing that
pseudo-package, I was able to chose ESD in the GStreamer properties,
and everything works!
