My mails are not stored locally (using IMAP)

Yes, I did have this disabled.  I am going to try enabling it and see
what happens.

On the other hand, there is no valid error message, and nothing in the
debug log to suggest what the user should do

Even if the issue is not fixed immediately, can the logging or error
message be improved, e.g. giving the user the bug ID?

If an issue is likely to generate a lot of user complaints, that may
still be release critical.
