I have found the contrast to be too low on both the screens I saw it on: my Thinkpad x61s (laptop, 1024x768), and my desktop (it's a 24 inch iiyama LCD screen, and I'm not quite certain what is the resolution in early boot. It's certainly not the native 1920x1080 though). Thanks for looking into this issue!
