This was discussed on the zlib list: [1].  I think others are using it
(i.e., this is not a sign that it is completely untested :)).

dh_autoreconf from the dh-autoreconf package seems to do an ok job of
regenerating configure and cleaning up when done, using an ugly hack
explained in the package description.

Thanks.  FWIW I agree that this is something more for wheezy+1.  No
one would have time to start using the shared library before wheezy is
released anyway.  And that provides some time to work on adding symbol
versioning upstream.
