HAL has been deprecated for a long time already, and is in the process
of being removed from Debian (as well as other distros; see [1]).

Forwarded upstream [2], as well as provided debug output. If you have
a Launchpad account, please subscribe to the upstream bug report and
converse directly with upstream developers (otherwise, I'll have to
relay replies between the Debian BTS and Launchpad, which just takes
more time).
