ah, I thought there was maybe some generic problem with cycling
between interfaces.

Yes! That solves it, thanks. I commented out the line:

InputDevice     "Generic Mouse"

from the "ServerLayout" Section, restarted X and all is now fine.

It's strange that it all worked fine in the previous version then
suddenly started doing this, I haven't changed my X config in a long
time.
