The original posters problem was a keybinding problem. This appears to
be a mousewheel problem.

The same, or a very similar problem has been reported to me by Brian
Pack (acfpack/verizon.net) - he reports that his problem was caused by
having two mouse(s) (mice?) in /etc/X11/XFree86-4. It sounds like each
time you try to mouse-wheel, it moves two desktops, instead of one.

Give this a try.
