Ref: bug report #291913 Dist: Debian unstable sid Package: gettext-0.14.1-8 all except MIPS
I agree with Mr. Bohm and second the motion to deprecate the Java dependency introduced in gettext 0.14.1-8. The upstream source does not have any Java programming in the GNU gettext code unlike the Debian gettext code.
The Debian gettext could be renamed jgettext or gettext-java and become a fork to the GNU gettext used by the standard international linux OS. Perhaps the upstream authors would choose to include Java gettext with the current gettext or add gettext to Java. The new package is so different from the real gettext as to be sensibly viewed as an unwanted bug. Nothing else important has required that Java dependency until now, except for maybe the Zaurus, and the option to avoid the whole Java thing as unwanted is now gone. This IS bad.
Making gettext build depend on Java and binary depend on Java libraries causes the gettext package to now conflict with mandatory local policies. gettext upgrades are now on hold.
Request that you change Java not Debian.
