Package: gettext
Version: 0.14.1-8
Severity: normal

The new gettext package released today includes the files needed to
also use gettext with Java programs (thanks). Unfortunately this
had a small side effect: The entire gettext package now declares a
dependency on libgcj, which is not needed (or even wanted) in
install scenarios that don't otherwise include Java.

I therefore respectfully suggest that either of the following
changes be made to the gettext package.

a. Change the libgcj dependency to a conflict against older libgcj
versions. This would be the best option if the 3 libgcj-using
files in /usr/lib/gettext/ are such that they will only be used
by programs otherwise linked to libgcj themselves. Otherwise
  not.

b. Simply downgrade the libgcj dependency to Recommends or Suggests
and add wording to the long package description such as:
"The suggested package libgcj is only needed if you use
gettext with programs written in Java."
(where "suggested" and "written in Java" should be changed to
"recommended" and "compiled with gcj" as appropriate).

Gratefully yours

Jakob
