Package: lout-common
Version: 3.30-1
Severity: wishlist

Hi,

The `lout' package lacks support for easily making it benefit from other
fonts that get installed on the system. Ideally, `lout' (or rather
`lout-common') should provide a `lout.defoma' script so that Defoma can
know about it. Such a script should be able to add/remove @FontDef
entries from Lout's `fontdefs.ld' database (in a way similar to how
several packages modify `inetd.conf') and run `lout -x'. Otherwise, it
could simply create a new font database file (e.g. `cm-fonts.ld' for
Computer Modern, etc.) for each new font package, although this is much
less elegant. Obviously, the script should also create/remove a symlink
to the AFM file of each new font in /usr/share/lout/font. For details,
see http://snark.niif.spb.su/~uwe/lout/essays/1365.fonts.txt (the
`fontdef' thing is outdated).

Unfortunately, while there are lots of `ttf-*' packages and `xfonts-*'
packages, there aren't many Type1 font packages. The `lmodern' package
(which would be very useful), for instance, is currently too dependent
on TeX so it may need to either be fixed (e.g. split into two packages)
or we could create a `lout-font-lmodern' package.

Thanks,
Ludovic.
