You can try to download by hand the flash-kernel script from Squeeze or sid (and its dependencies, if any), boot the NAS in rescue mode[1], install flash-kernel with dpkg in a console and retry to flash the kernel from that point. I've done this once, but it was some months ago, so not sure any more of every step :-/ I've always some notes from this install time, a bit in a mess, waiting to become a howto, but perhaps already usefull (?).
