To make it easier to port (broken) packages that compile on Linux, but not on Cygwin. On the other hand, we could argue that by not changing the typedef, we are doing users a favor - by using a different type than Linux, we are forcing them to fix their packages to write portable code rather than buggy code. - -- Don't work too hard, make some time for fun as well!
