I completely agree, and this is something I'd like to improve when we overhaul the build system. Our build has become rather unfriendly of late.

One problem (for me at least) is that working on the build system is neither exciting nor rewarding. I've written the GHC build system from scratch once, and I don't have a lot of inclination to do it again! Still, it's hurting enough now that we do need to devote some concerted effort to improving it.
