If you're trying to do an ab initio build with no prior build products
lying around, then starting from a fresh tree should be cheap,
particularly compared to the cost of the build itself.

I hesitate to drag the version control discussion into places where it
notionally doesn't belong, but cheap local branching makes creating a
fresh tree quick in absolute terms, not merely when compared to
something slow. A performant VCS influences parts of the development
process that you might not expect it to affect.
