The problem is - i'm highly interested in computer graphics and lighting is very interesting - but i'm afraid i don't have a clue on how to implement it (after the students are selected, there is one month before coding begins - i would use that to study and learn more about the subject) and I can't detail enough in the proposal.
There are a number of books available on the topic of implementing a photo-realistic renderer. While there are some differences between such a renderer and a tool to compute lightmaps a number of the used algorithms are the same. Look around your library, ask people you know with similar interests etc. if they have any books on the topic.
Related to the project, i have a good knowledge of C++ and have a mathematical background of vector calculus and linear algebra.
Some idea of physics may be helpful, too. (Tho the stuff needed for lighting in computer graphics should be simple enough, and necessary basics should be explained with any introduction, I think.)
My main question is this - how can i detail more about a subject i'm not familiar with yet? and what is expected from a good proposal ?
Check http://code.google.com/p/google-summer-of-code/wiki/AdviceforStudents for information on a good proposal.
The submission interval is one week long, and applications can be edited in that time. In your case you should probably make use of that - give your best shot now, but try to read some stuff on the topic, and update your application based on that. Depending on what you'd like to do with lighter2 Marten can probably throw some names of techniques or algorithms at you which you can check out and see if you can grasp them good enough to implement them.
