To the original poster, if I may offer one other suggestion, you
REALLY need to offload the drive performance onto a good controller.
You already have some IDE/SATA drives.  If you want to keep your
hardware investment to a minimum, consider a real (not FAKE RAID, such
as highpoint) IDE RAID controller.

1. Any IDE RAID controller by 3Ware will do, allows you to use
existing drive hardware.
2. Same RAID controller in #1 plus more IDE drives.  More spindles
equals more performance.
3. A better SATA RAID controller by 3Ware with SATA drives, costs
quite a bit more though.
4. *BEST*: SCSI or SAS RAID controller with SCSI or SAS drives.

Bottom line: your performance will increase relative to the amount of
money you spend and the quality of hardware you buy.
