Actually, sub-pixel hinting works, but the check box does not work correctly : you can 
check 
the box, it will be unchecked after going back to config panel, but sub-pixel hinting 
is applied. 
However, there is no way to go back to non sub-pixel hinting (since the box is 
unchecked). 
On a CRT monitor, sub-pixel is no good, you have to check again horizontal RVB to have 
something correct. 
But the problem is probably a bug in KDE : the sub-pixel choice cannot be inactivated 
after 
selected the first time.

Using mdk-9.1rc1. In kcontrol->fonts, enable anti-aliasing. Then enable sub-pixel 
hinting. 
Click apply and quit kcontrol. Start kcontrol again. Go to fonts and find that the 
option 
sub-pixel hinting has become unchecked !! I tried several times but kcontrol always 
reverts to 
the option unchecked.
