Thanks Adam for the info (which I already know) since I use both CRT and LCD monitors.
According to the page http://grc.com/ctwhat.htm :
"So even though sub-pixel rendering is better than nothing on CRT's, its "colorized"
aspects
only really work on LCD displays. "

What Adam is ignorant of is said in the phrase "better than nothing on CRT's". I have
confirmed that enabling sub-pixel hinting _does_ have an effect on anti-aliased font
rendering
on CRT's too. Try looking at an anti-aliased black colored text thru "xmag" with and
without the
sub-pixel hinting option enabled. You will see that (for sub-pixel hinting enabled)
many pixels
have different colors (red , blue ...) as opposed to monochrome pixels varying only in
greyscale
(for no sub-pixel hinting).
Now, on a CRT, since they are no sub-pixels, it would be more appropriate to call it
"pixel-hinting" but that does not change the fact that whatever goes in the name of
"sub-pixel
hinting" on a CRT does make a difference.

Using mdk-9.1rc1. In kcontrol->fonts, enable anti-aliasing. Then enable sub-pixel
hinting.
Click apply and quit kcontrol. Start kcontrol again. Go to fonts and find that the
option
sub-pixel hinting has become unchecked !! I tried several times but kcontrol always
reverts to
the option unchecked.
