Probably because you are not running KDE in vncserver. if you set KDE as your
default WM and started GNOME from the graphical login, vncserver will start
the default, which is still KDE. What is in your ~/.desktop and
/etc/sysconfig/desktop files?
They are both currently set to KDE, because I switched back to KDE after the test. I will change the default WM back to GNOME, logon to GNOME, make sure ~/desktop and /etc/sysconfig/destop both specifiy GNOME, start vncserver again, and see what happens.
I found after the steps described above that the ~/desktop file still contained:
DESKTOP=KDE
I changed it to:
DESKTOP=GNOME
and started vncserver. Now the remote tightvnc viewer displays a plain blue screen without icons, instead of the default Mandrake desktop image without icons.
