If you remove /usr/bin/mandrakegalaxy from the GNOME session start-up
programs, you should be able to use GNOME in vnc as I was able to do in
Xnest. This program actually starts a KDE dialog and is apparently the
only thing that prevent GNOME from starting.

I tried that. It doesn't solve the vncserver problem here. I get the GNOME logon screen and GNOME runs normally, but a remote tightvnc viewer still shows only the default Mandrake desktop graphic with no icons or other controls as when running KDE.
