I see there has been another major unannounced update to the 7.1 beta
tree on aarnet, the third release by my count, yet the VERSION file
has remained at April 21.

Please can we make sure that every update batch also updates this
file, does not occur more often than daily, and that this VERSION
string is mentioned in all beta test reports so that the problem can
be tied back positively to a specific release and RPM version?
