I think Ivan's last proposal sounds good: get in the JMX part of the patch now, 
including changes for Luke's last round of feedback, and then queue up a 
separate jira for consistency around the sinks.  Consistency around the sinks 
seems like the riskier change, so this is a good way to manage the risk.
