the pain of working through things thus far for the shaded clients leads me to
believe that our current best bet is going over things manually. it's very much
an involved forensic activity because we lack clear documentation of our
expectations for downstream.
the most important advice I can offer to others who also want to help in this
space is to be very verbose in comments to explain why you think things are or
are not needed. that way, at least follow on as we work through things will be
easier.
