I fear there are more bugs lurking around in `texindex`.
Please consider the following input.

@findex @sortas{\\} \\

```
With version 7.1 I get the following index collation in the PDF output.
\ \\
A a
A
Z z
Z
However, current git yields the following.
A a
Z z
A a
Z z
\ \\
This looks really broken...
