It may indeed be a QEMU issue, or it may be something else. Testing the individual components (as Zheng Da just suggested in his email) is the right way to figure that out. The installation system is an old Linux 2.2 (?) one, but if that one has problems detecting your HDs, then GNU Mach likely also will have. To check that, you could simply boot a GNU Mach kernel on it (just the kernel, nothing else) and have a look at the kernel messages. I'm obviously a bit reluctant to replace flubber's pfinet with the in-progress one, but what I can offer is that you get a separate Xen domU on zenhost (where flubber is also running on) and you can do in that one whatever you want.
