Log entries really matter when the code goes on a permanent branch. That said, building them up as you write the code is by far the best way to do them. You can edit and trim the entries later so that they describe the final set of branch changes rather than a series of entries obsoleting each other. But doing them while you code is a very good idea. That is what I did for the oskit-branch.
