What you are describing is more appropriate for the GNU system in general than for the Hurd specifically. See the gnu-system-discuss mailing list for more information, this is somewhat off-topic on bug-hurd I guess. Of course, Alfred is also the maintainer of the GNU system, so you might just run into the next dead end...
