perhaps this is a great opportunity for interested developers to
create a new -H type that:

o has no limits, period
o is portable, period
o fully specifies all edge cases to the finest detail
  (including trailing slash, relsyms, duplicate entries, permissions
on dirs, etc.)
o allows for future features (like marking pathnames for deletion)
o is simple enough to implement widely

then people can use the great cpio interface with this new format, and
at some point in the future it will become standard, because it's so
bloody good.
