I have all three weapons and from what I read in the hints the hammer is the easiest to block the sword is average and the staff is the most difficult to block. The game could be better if all three were held equal with improvements based on use of the weapons the more you use the more difficult to block, but according to the hints that's not how the mechanics work. The only weapon you get experience bonuses on I found was the staff but maybe experience bonuses start coming with the other weapons when those get used enough I can't say.
