Java took over in part because at one point it was the "in" language, but more importantly it was a) free and b) available where needed in a single version - on Solaris or Linux for the computer labs, Macs and Windows for the students at home. The other options when the switch happened in the late 90s either required money to buy tools or weren't standardized very well across platforms.
