From my experimenting, a new document cannot be added to an
existing project until it the new doc is saved. Once it is
saved, you can grab the document icon at the very top of the
document next to its name (what is that bar called?) and drag it
into a project file list.
I would also like the option of having new documents open into
the frontmost project window.

Unfortunately the "Open documents into the front window when possible"
preference does not add a new document to the a project window - it
adds it to the frontmost window that is not a project window. If no
non-project windows are open a new document will open in a new
window.
