Anything SCSI-related in the logs?
I'm not a FreeBSD person, but at least under FreeBSD 7, these symptoms
would indicate that the SCSI-device is unconfigured... perhaps
whatever mechanism set the device nodes interferes in case of drive or
SCSI-Bus problems.
