I'm looking for a way to back up the "Documents and Settings" directories
on a Windows XP box on my network, and rsyncd is not currently an option.
I tried without success manually enabling sharing.

This seems to be a major flaw, IMNSHO, in the SMB backup method.
Much important information is or can be located in the "Documents and
Settings" directory, not to mention the WINDOWS or Program Files directories.

One possible solution I considered is "Hidden Administrative Shares,"
e.g. C$ for a C drive. I've never gotten C$ to work, however, on this
particular Windows XP host, nor have I found evidence of any hidden
administrative share on this system. When I try to log onto C$ with
smbclient I get the following error:

  tree connect failed: NT_STATUS_BAD_NETWORK_NAME

(I get a similar error message attempting to back up C$ using backuppc).

The backuppc documentation on these general issues is disappointingly sparse.

Resorting to RFM on the windows host, I found the following information in
the "Windows XP Home Edition Help and Support Center:"

The Sharing option is not available for the Documents and Settings,
Program Files, and WINDOWS system folders. In addition, you cannot
share folders in other user's profiles.

In a web search I found the following article called "Disable Windows
NT/W2K/XP Hidden Administrative Shares:"

http://www.windowsnetworking.com/kbase/WindowsTips/WindowsXP/AdminTips/Network/DisableWindowsNTW2KXPHiddenAdministrativeShares.html

It refers to a link discussing hidden administrative shares on
Windows XP:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;Q314984

Both articles, however, only discuss disabling hidden administrative
shares, without addressing finding, creating or enabling them.
I've also searched the backuppc archives, and I am now wondering if
there is any solution to this problem. Thanks for any reponses.
