I think the beta numbering scheme used in automake in the past was odd letters (aceg...) for devel snapshots, and even letters (bdfh...) for betas. That is, if you aren't ready for 1.11.2, then the beta would be named 1.11.1b. But never having done an automake release myself, I can't say that for certain.
