I have limited experience, but never have I experienced a failed smart
jack. Also it depends on where the Telco considers the demarc as to
whether or not you can remove the smart jack from the path or not.


Last deployment I had, I wasn't allowed anywhere near that end of the
wire. I had a RJ45 dropped where I could plug it into the asterisk
machine and that was it.
over the years we've only had 1 NIU completely fail. usually what happens (to us anyways), is that one leg will start flapping (resetting, and since most NIU's nowdays default to ESF... (we use SF) it will sit there and get RLOS (receive loss of signal) errors) red alarm, fine (repeat)
