Vonage got Cisco to include a "password protect the config" in the latest version of the firmware, and as far as I know now all the Vonage ATAs are forever destined to be used with Vonage and only Vonage.
Cell providers do the same, but they help you unlock the phone after a set period - one or two years. I would hope that Vonage change their policy to the same - vendor lock in for a limited period of time.
