Hmm, can asterisk use radius? or ldap? or some other realtime external
database for the call rules? That would be wonderful, although I didn't
think that was a possibility.

We supply Broadband and therefore use Radius already. Most of the billing
software seams to have some mention of radius somewhere. I am currently
looking to make a H.323/SIP gateway with Asterisk, get the billing side
working and then add PSTN access. I will have a look at Trabas, but still
at the stage of just installing every thing.

you will find many software solutions that use Radius. Back in 2001 I
worked on the billing system at WorldCom and UUNet which generates
billions of CDRs a month. It used Kenan *and* Radius. The only GPL'ed
billing software I could find was Trabas which you said sucked also.
It would be way more useful to people if you could explain *why* in your
opinion Radius is not suitable for billing purposes. And while you are
at it, please take a minute to share what you think is the right
approach to a billing solution for Asterisk. After all, you have already
integrated a billing solution into Asterisk that afaik you can not share
due to resistance of the "suits".
Didn't someone say resistance was futile? :)
